Birchfield Coal Mines is a privately-owned family company.

It has been extracting coal from the Giles Creek basin on the South Island's West Coast for more than 30 years. The sub-bituminous, low sulphur coal is largely used for industrial and enclosed domestic burners. Birchfield also owns the Strongman mine, which is in care and maintenance.

The company also has a number of other coal and minerals permits on the West Coast.
